Tutor: Ian Hance is a local artist and birdwatcher in the NT for the past thirty years.
About: Tumbling Waters has a current list of over 120 species. The Park sits at the intersection of three habitats: savannah woodland. riverine and monsoon vine forest hence the birdlife is prolific. Identifying food sources for birds will be a part of our walks.
Savannah woodlands: Early start: meet at Troppo Space. 400 m walk looking for open forest birds and grassland birds 45 mins approx. Then to:
Riverine (Blackmore River Billabongs): A short walk down to the billabong and along the Blackmore River looking for waterbirds, kingfishers etc. 45 mins approx. Then to:
Monsoon vine forest in the park: Tumbling Waters hosts all the vine forest specialists, comfortable strolling in the park 45 mins. approx. Finally, at:
Troppo Space (in air-conditioned comfort): in the remaining time we will learn how to identify birds and their habitats. Looking at field guides, Tumbling Waters bird lists, bird call apps etc. Optics and how to use them in the field. Sharing photos and discussion.
Equipment: To bring hat, covered shoes (no thongs) sunscreen, water bottle, binoculars if you have them, camera, small fold up stool if you have one. I have some spare pairs of basic bins.
