For over three months, Georgians have been protesting in the streets of Tbilisi and other major Georgian cities, demanding democracy and human rights. Protests erupted across Georgia after Georgian Dream (the ruling party), announced its decision to halt the country's European integration efforts. The pro-Russian government passed laws to suppress free expression in Georgia, placing the cultural sector under immense pressure, as the government attempts to silence artistic expression and free speech, unjustly imprisoning activists, journalists and artists who fight for European values.
The Government Crackdown
Rigged Elections
Violent attacks on peaceful protesters
Journalists assaulted while reporting
Mass arrests and denial of fair trials
New repressive laws restricting fundamental freedom in different art forms
Theatrical workers, organizations, and freelancer artists have clearly expressed their position through this strike. They continue to protest for democratic values and fight against police repression in Georgia. Support artists who have been beaten up and arrested by the police who face medical bills and large fines.
Mautskebeli is an independent grassroots media, which introduces the most vital political and social issues to the broader public. Your contribution will help widen the scale coverage, and could help bring change to the current political status quo.
Georgia's most highly regarded local news outlet. It's founder, Mzia Amaglobeli is currently in prison on trumped upcharges of assualting a police officer - a transparen attempt to silence critical media. The next hearing of her trial takes place on the same day as Letters From Georgia.
